The Social Justice Summer Camp is a free event open to all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in St. Louis. The camp is hosted by Ali Academy a free K through 12 public school in the Carondelet community set to open in Fall 2022 to serve children in Saint Louis, MO.
This summer, scholars will identify a dream, e.g. Healthy and plentiful snacks for all kids, safe creative places to play, houses and neighborhoods that are designed to promote good health, community centers with amazing resources etc. Then scholars will learn about some of the issues that get in the way of such dreams, e.g. violence, poverty, lack of access etc.), and finally they will create a plan and take actions to get just a little closer to social justice.
Scholars will:
Learn about health care in St. Louis (Who gets it, who does not, why, and what can we do to help everyone be healthy?)
Learn about housing in St. Louis (Who gets it, who does not, why, and what can we do to help everyone get suitable housing?)
Learn about violence in St. Louis (What does the data say, why does violence happen, what can we do to eliminate it?)
Scholars will learn about these issues; explore careers in each area; talk to nurses, housing developers, city officials, police officers, politicians, and local activists; and take action to achieve some level of social justice.
This event includes free breakfast, lunch and snacks as well as masks and hand sanitizer. Free transportation to the camp within the St. Louis area can be arranged if necessary.
